Petron promotes safety awareness through Biker Meet-Up

Petron Corporation, the country's leading oil company, signified its support for safety awareness especially among motorcycle riders by sponsoring the first Biker Meet-Up of Safe-T-Ryders Training Center, held last 18 February 2012 at the Ortigas Home Depot Complex in Pasig City.

Targeted at TODAs, motorcycle clubs and individual riders, the Biker Meet-Up program included an open forum with former LTO chief Alberto Suansing, who is currently the executive director of the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership (PGRSP). In a lively exchange of ideas, Suansing discussed safety concerns with the biker-participants.

TV-radio host and biker Love-Love Tioseco was the celebrity guest for the Meet-and-Greet portion of the event, and the participants had the opportunity to have their photos taken with her.

Finally, the program concluded with a short presentation on the dangers of riding under the influence of alcohol. In an interactive demonstration using FatalVision goggles, the Safe-T-Ryder team simulated the effects of drinking on visual perception and the damaging consequences that can result in injuries and even death.

The range of Petron Sprint 4T motorcycle oils was also introduced to the participants, with an overview of their specifications and uses. Safe-T-Ryders launches Bikers Meet-Ups to promote safety awareness

As part of its safety awareness campaign for motorcycle riders, Safe-T-Ryders Motorcycle Training Center is launching a series of Bikers Meet-Ups, with the first one scheduled on Saturday, 18 February 2012, at the Ortigas Home Depot Complex.

The Bikers Meet-Up program will start with an open forum featuring a well-known safety advocate or a leading personality from a government agency such as the Land Transportation Office or the Metro Manila Development Authority, or from a non-government organization such as the PGRSP (Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership). This open forum is an opportunity for bikers to dialogue on issues related to traffic regulations, safety ordinances, etc. For February, former LTO Chief and now Executive Director of PGRSP Alberto Suansing will be exchanging opinion with the bikers.

For the Meet-and-Greet portion, a celebrity biker will be invited to participate in the event and personally meet the participants. Views and ideas will be shared, but more importantly, this will give ordinary bikers photo opportunities with a well-known personality in the biking community. TV host and bike racer Love-Love Tioseco will be appearing in February.

Another key component of the program is a special presentation on the dangers of “Riding Under the Influence of Alcohol”. Safe-T-Ryders will present educational materials about the very damaging effects of riding under the influence of alcohol, and the severe consequences resulting in serious injuries and even death.

Participants can also expect to take home some exciting raffle prizes and give-aways, courtesy of the Bikers Meet-Ups sponsors.

Clubs, individual riders, TODAs are welcome to join this event, which is free of charge. The 1st Biker Meet-Up will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday, 18 February 2012, at the Safe-T-Ryders Training Center at the Ortigas Home Depot complex along J. Vargas Avenue, Pasig City. Vision Petron opens exhibit at the National Museum

The Vision Petron national student art competition opened its exhibit at the ground floor of the Museum of the Filipino People of the National Museum last 17 January 2012. To run until April 2012, the three-month exhibit will include the winning artworks of students and related images by the judges of the photography category of the 2011 Vision Petron National Student Art Competition.

Themed Lakbay Pinoy: Journeys to Remember, Pathways to Rediscover, the exhibit is divided into three sub-themes that identify life journeys as expressed symbolically by roads, highways and byways. It can be a mountain path representing a journey to success, or a zigzag lane symbolizing seasons of change. It can be a forest trail sparking childhood memories, or a nostalgic route conjuring reminiscences of student life.

Kapalaran (Destiny) relates to the hopes, dreams and aspirations of Filipinos. Pathways may be hard—as depicted in Dale Erispe's Lakbaying Walang Katapusan, or rocky like Mark Benitez's Lakbay Aral—but with determination and faith, one can reach one's goals. Other examples are Success Begins Here by Alexis Gapal; Gareta by Gim Sam Salak; and Joyride by Eden Joy Cruz.

Kaginhawaan (Lightness of Being) expresses the "emotional experience" encountered in a journey such as fun or lessons learned along the way. The happy faces in The Path of Life by Michael Froilan, and Kaya Mo, Kaya Ko, Kaya Natin by Esmeraldo Montero are part of this sub-theme. Other artworks included here are Sa Tamang Destinasyon by Dave Cruz; Yu-Pi, Yumapak sa Pinitak by Amadeo Cristobal; Living on a Prayer by Karl Albais; Juan Ride by Katleen Joy Gonzales; Pamanang Alaala by Meredith Gualberto; Byahero by John Mark Saycon; Promdi by Don Bryan Michael Bunag; Little Help for Mom by Lydel Buenconsejo; and Energy Saver by Reu Dawner Flores.

Katotohanan (Truth) features roads as venues for growth and progress. These roads reveal our character and the values we imbibe as we constantly traverse them everyday. Some of the country's leading photographers who served as Vision Petron judges have contributed two images each of their interpretations of the Lakbay Pinoy theme. The master photographers include Wig Tysman, George Tapan, Romy Vitug, Denise Weldon, Scott "Gutsy" Tuason, Edwin Tuyay, and Sonny Yabao. This interaction between masters and budding artists is a significant dialogue for them and the audience as well. By encouraging students to creatively discover their talents under a master's guidance, Vision Petron is inspired by the belief that free artistic expression is intrinsic to nation-building.

Vision Petron was a most eagerly awaited national student art contest and the Lakbay Pinoy contest theme garnered the biggest number of entries and number of school participation. As an adjunct to this banner year, Petron is sharing these winning works to a wider audience by holding the exhibit at the National Museum until April 2012.

Boracay undertakes coral reef restoration

With its coral cover assessed to be in alarmingly poor condition, proponents of the Boracay Beach Management Program (BBMP) have undertaken coral reef restoration efforts as part of its coastal resources management program.

Through the initiative of the BBMP-Technical Working Group, reef rehabilitation activities consisting of the establishment of coral nurseries, transplantation of coral nubbins on degraded reefs, and deployment of reef domes, were launched in September 2010. Monitoring reports by the coastal and marine resources team headed by Mike Labatiao have reported encouraging results.

Earlier studies revealed that Boracay's live coral cover had seriously deteriorated to only about 15-20%. In 2009, the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc. (CCEFI) reported that coral conditions on the western side consisted of about 23% live coral, while about 77% were non-living. A Xavier University assessment of the eastern side in 2010 recorded 42% live coral cover, while a 2011 study of the southern side by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) indicated an alarmingly low 9% live coral cover.

Through the initiative of the local government of Malay, Aklan, under the leadership of Mayor John P. Yap, and in close collaboration with Boracay Foundation Inc., Petron Foundation, San Miguel Corporation and other stakeholders, the Boracay Beach Management Program (BBMP) focused on coastal resources management as one of its priority areas.

In particular, Petron partnered with Boracay Foundation Inc. to champion the reef rehabilitation program. In September 2010, a coral nursery using PVC nets was established near Crocodile Island. Another coral nursery, made of biotech screens, was planted at the Balinghai snorkeling area in May 2011. Coral nubbins from the nurseries were then transplanted and attached to dead coral to encourage regrowth and eventually restore live coral cover.

Multi-functional reef domes were deployed about 100-meters from the Boracay shoreline. Aside from serving as nurseries for coral regrowth, they are also fish sanctuaries and help increase fish density. At the same time, they act as wave breakers during the typhoon season. Because of their utility, the BBMP-TWG is building more reef domes to be deployed along Boracay's main beach area.

With its previous experience in the United Nations Development Programme's Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) framework, Petron coordinated the local government initiatives of Mayor Yap to target seven priority areas under the BBMP. These include coastal resources management, water and waste water management, solid waste management, watershed protection, hazard prevention, local governance, and information, education and communication. With a strong partnership among stakeholders under the leadership of the local government unit, other partner agencies who actively contribute to the BBMP include the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local agencies, non-government organizations, youth groups, and the business sector.

Boracay celebrates gains in beach management program

The Boracay Beach Management Program (BBMP), a multi-sectoral initiative for the protection, sustainability and enhancement of the island's coastal and marine resources, celebrated its first anniversary last 24 September 2011, with an impressive list of accomplishments in seven priority areas.

Following a comprehensive strategy, Malay Mayor John P. Yap recognized the importance of dynamic public-private partnership in achieving tangible improvements after just one year of program implementation. The Boracay Beach Management Council (BBMC) rallied under the call to action, "Para Sa Boracay Ako! For Boracay I Will...", and reported the following achievements:

Local Governance. With strong leadership and political will, Malay Mayor John P. Yap has pushed for the implementation of the BBMP priority programs. Visitors and residents are reminded to observe municipal ordinances against littering, smoking, extracting sand and pebbles, etc.

Coastal Resources. Regular beach and underwater clean-up drives have been performed by various volunteer groups. Coastal nurseries supply new corals that are transplanted in degraded reef areas. Artificial reef domes, deployed in strategic areas, have encouraged the reemergence of new coral species and provide excellent breeding grounds for many fish varieties. Mangrove growth has been closely monitored.

Watershed. A comprehensive reforestation plan for 260-hectares is in place. For 2011, the target is to reforest 63-hectares with 30,000 seedlings produced from the seedling nursery. During the anniversary celebrations, Mayor Yap launched the Adopt-A-Tree program and distributed some 3,000 seedlings to Boracay students and foresters to be planted in their backyards and school grounds.

Water and Waste Water. Access to potable water has reached 96% of households, and the sewage treatment plant has been upgraded for environmentally compliant waste water effluent quality.

Solid Waste. New equipment and upgraded facilities have made garbage collection and processing more effective.

Hazard Protection. A Philippine National Red Cross office is now present in Boracay, and emergency response capabilities have been enhanced with trained personnel, new sea patrol craft and upgraded communications equipment.

Information, Education & Communication. The "For Boracay I Will" advocacy generated public awareness and cooperation from various stakeholders, and is now ready to reach out to a wider audience with an expanded campaign themed "Sali Ako Dyan!" For greater social media visibility, a FaceBook page "For Boracay I Will" welcomes posts from the public about their happy memories of Boracay and how to preserve this island paradise for future generations.

With its previous experience in the United Nations Development Programme's Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) framework, Petron played a key role in facilitating the formation of the BBMP. Starting out with a handful of members from the local government units, national government agencies, community organizations, youth groups and the private sector, the Boracay Beach Management Council (BBMC) now counts about 30 proponents.

Petron Lakbay Alalay, the country's longest running motorist assistance program, is once again ensuring that Filipino travelers will have a worry-free trip during the upcoming "undas" holidays from 28 October to 01 November 2011. Through the Free Safety Checks offered at participating Petron stations in major highways, those planning road-trips during the long Halloween weekend can prepare for the trip by ensuring that their vehicles are in roadworthy condition.

The extensive Free Safety Check routine covers 38 inspection points, including: (a) TIRES—tire pressure, tire wear, and spare tire; (b) ENGINE—air filter element, fan belt, power steering belt, alternator belt, air conditioner belt, upper and lower radiator hose; (c) FLUIDS—engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, clutch fluid, gear oil, power steering fluid, radiator coolant, and window washer; (d) BATTERY—battery fluid and battery terminals; (e) LIGHTS—headlights, signal lights, brake lights, hazard, fog lights, third brake light and light gauges; (f) UNDERCHASSIS—tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints, cross joints, shock absorbers and axle boots; and (g) ACCESSORIES—wiper blades, horn, basic tools, jack and early warning device. Free Safety Motorcycle check-ups will be offered at Petron stations in Libis, Marquinton (Marikina), Sucat, La Loma, and Makati. There will be also be a doctor and nurse on duty at these stations to offer free medical assistance. Free towing of Class 1 vehicles will be available at the South Luzon Expressway, while free medical assistance with an ambulance, doctor and nurse will be on call at Petron stations in NLEX Marilao, NLEX Balagtas, NLEX Lakeshore, SLEX San Pedro, Star Toll Batangas, Subic and Tagaytay. These activities are being undertaken in partnership with Chevrolet Philippines.

Motorists who gas up at participating stations in North and South Luzon, Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao are also in for a special treat with the Free Coffee promo. Grand Prix Weekend

The two-day event gives speed junkies the full-on experience of a grand prix weekend forhalf the price of a regular trackday. Running on the track's short course, Saturday's whole-day open practice session allows drivers to get enough track time to hone in their skill and lets the teams adjust the car's suspension and engine set-up to squeeze out the fastest lap. Each run will consist of a 15-minute session where cars will be released on track in groups of 10. Free practice will begin promptly at 8:00 am and end by 5:00 pm. This lets everyone drive to their heart's content, so we’re all hyped up for racing on Sunday!

On race day, drivers race against the clock in timed solo runs. Competing in different classes according to time brackets, each competitor only gets three laps to put down the fastest lap time, so Saturday's practice and car set-up will surely come into play. Time to put the pedal to the metal as the quickest time in each class wins.

Speedlab Grand Eyeball and Trackday

It’s time to put the pedal to the metal at Speedlab's Grand Eyeball and Trackday on October 29 to 30, 2011. Run on the Clark International Speedway's (CIS) short course, put your car and driving skills against the clock. Saturday will be an open track day session to allow competitors to set up their rides and practice their driving skills, but on Sunday we go racing!

All vehicles must first go through technical inspection for safety and classification. Each driver will then be allowed on track during free practice for a 15 minutes session in groups of 10. Free practice will be open all day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, so you can drive to your heart's content.

During race day, drivers will go head-to-head in timed solo runs, competing in different classes according to time brackets. Each competitor is only given three laps to set his or her best time and the quickest time in each class wins. So, rev up your engines and take racing off the streets at the Speedlab Grand EB and Trackday.

Boracay forms 7-km human chain for environment protection

Boracay residents and tourists joined hands to form a seven-kilometer human chain along its world-renowned white sand beach to celebrate the first anniversary of the Boracay Beach Management Program (BBMP) last 23 September 2011. BBMP is a multi-sectoral initiative for the protection, sustainability and enhancement of the island's coastal and marine resources.

The anniversary program, led by Malay Mayor John P. Yap, was attended by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Ramon Paje, Presidential Adviser on Environmental Protection Nereus Acosta, and Department of Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Rico Puno.

DENR Sec. Paje noted that with proper planning and development, Boracay could further evolve to accommodate more tourists while maintaining environmental sustainability. He also lauded the initiative of Mayor Yap in leading the dynamic private-public partnership that has successfully achieved significant improvements in coastal resources management, water and waste water management, solid waste management, watershed protection, hazard prevention, local governance, and information, education and communication.

Aside from the human chain, the anniversary program also included the launch of the Adopt-a-Tree program in Boracay, which aims to plant 30,000 seedlings in the island within one year. To jumpstart it, nearly 2,000 seedlings were distributed to Boracay high school students and foresters who pledeged to plant these trees in their backyards and school grounds. This was followed by a clean-up drive to highlight Boracay's anti-smoking and anti-littering campaign.

One of BBMP's convenors, Petron Corporation, contributed to the environmental protection drive by providing free emission testing for public utility vehicles at the Petron service station. As witnessed by DENR Secretary Ramon Paje and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Director Juan Miguel Cuna, Petron's Carbon Flush product demonstration resulted in a dramatic reduction in smoke emission values from 3.753 to 0.399, or an improvement of almost 90%. Key members of the champion Petron Blaze Booster team, including most valuable player Arwind Santos, were on hand to add star power to this activity and the rest of the anniversary festivities.

Malu Erni, general manager of Petron Foundation, which introduced the globally-recognized Integrated Coastal Management to the BBMP, reaffirmed their organization's commitment to provide resources and expertise for long-term sustainability.

To encourage the youth sector to strengthen its support for BBMP, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), another staunch supporter, introduced a star-shaped mascot to embody the slogan "Sali Ako Dyan!", paving the way for the next stage of BBMP's advocacy.

Petron and SMC, in partnership with the Province of Aklan, the Municipality of Malay, and the Boracay Foundation Inc. (BFI) launched the BBMP and the "Para Sa Boracay Ako! For Boracay I Will" advocacy in 2010 to engage the island's various stakeholders in an integrated program that would ensure the island's environmental sustainability.

An arts and culture program for the youth, Vision Petron is an exhibition and competition for young and budding artists. Themed Lakbay Pinoy —Journeys to Remember, Pathways to Rediscover, this year’s competition focused on life journeys expressed symbolically by roads, highways and byways.

The winners of this year's Vision Petron student art competition were honored in awarding ceremonies held at the Petron Mega Plaza in Makati City last 31 August 2011.

The student art competition drew a record field of almost 2,000 submissions from student artists nationwide, the highest-ever in eleven years. Out of almost 700 entries in the painting category, a distinguished board of judges headed by National Artist Napoleon Abueva picked the following grand prize winners:

Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI), the award-giving body composed of motoring journalists, launched their search for the 2011-2012 Car of the Year-Philippines (COTY-PH) last 26 August 2011, at an official launch night held at the Congo Grille El Pueblo in Ortigas Center.

CAGI president Ferman Lao noted during his announcement that: "Despite the slowdown in 2011 car sales after last year's record highs, prospects for the Philippine automotive industry continue to be bright. With automotive manufacturers and distributors bringing in the latest models and offering a wider range of product offerings, Filipino consumers now have more options to choose from. From Chinese car brands offering more affordable entry level vehicles to European luxury brands at the other end of the spectrum, there is certainly a car to match every buyer's taste and budget. I believe that through COTY-PH, motoring journalists can provide useful information to Filipino consumers to guide their purchase decisions."

This year's COTY testing is open to all new passenger cars and commercial vehicles introduced in the Philippine market from 01 November 2010 to 31 October 2011. All eligible entries will be subjected to both qualitative and technical evaluation.

Qualitative evaluation examines the following vehicle attributes: (1) Aesthetics (interior/exterior); (2) ergonomics; (3) NVH or noise, vibration and harshness; (4) ride comfort; and (5) space. The qualitative evaluation process is open to all CAGI members and will be held at the Ortigas Home Depot parking lot over 6 weekends in September and October 2011.

For the rigorous technical testing, which will be held at the Clark International Speedway in late October 2011, a select team will conduct instrumented tests on the following parameters: (1) Acceleration, 0-100kph in seconds; (2) Braking distance, 100-0kph in meters; and (3) Handling, through a 120m chicane course.

Specific award categories vary from year to year, depending on the eligible vehicles. Typically, qualified entries are classified by:

Size: sub-compact, compact, mid-size, etc.
Function: sedan, crossover, SUV, pickup, van, truck, etc.
Drivetrain: 2WD, 4WD
Price: basic, premium, luxury, etc.

Winners of the 2011-2012 COTY-PH will be announced in April 2012, with the awarding ceremonies to be held during the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) at the World Trade Center.

Generika, an award-winning drugstore chain, has signed a memorandum of agreement with the UP-Manila College of Pharmacy to upgrade pharmacy services by pioneering and advocating clinical care in communities, a practice now prevalent in the United States, Canada, Europe and other parts of Asia.

Erikagen, Inc., owner of the Generika Drugstore trademark, has commissioned the UP-Manila College of Pharmacy to create training modules for Clinical Skills Improvement for Ambulatory and In-Patient Services. Tailor-made for Generika, the program consists of lecture, tools, didactics and practicals in unit dose drug dispensing and patient counseling services.

The pilot program will be offered at St. Cabrini Medical Center (SCMC) in Santo Tomas, Batangas, where Generika operates the in-patient pharmacy for the hospital. SCMC is the first institute to offer integrative cancer care and the first to be accredited as a medical tourism developer in the country. The training program is expected to upgrade the standards of clinical pharmacy services provided by Generika to SCMC as an important step for the accreditation of the hospital for ISO standards. Over the long term, the plan is to provide similar training to all community pharmacists employed by Generika Drugstore, thus ugrading the level of professional competence and revolutionizing the practice of pharmacy in Generika Drugstore outlets. Leading the discussion will be prominent social media activists Usec. Manuel (Manolo) L. He also won the 1st Prize for the Essay in English for the Carlos Palance Memorial Awards for Literature in 1997.

Ms. Gang Badoy is a media practitioner and alternative educator. A product of the Assumption San Lorenzo High School, UP Diliman and the Indianapolis-Purdue University, she worked first for ABS-CBN in San Francisco and became news desk editor for NBC’s Eyewitness News. In 1999, she accepted a post with the Diocese of San Jose, California, and worked closely with Catholic Relief Services. She came home to the Philippines in mid-2003 and joined Jesuit Communications (JesCom) and spearheaded workshops on “Media and Ministry” for the East Asian Pastoral Institute. Primarily a writer, Ms. Badoy founded Rock Ed Philippines, an alternative education volunteer group that works for a more interesting way of presenting socio-civic issues to the youth. She also devotes time to giving media literacy lectures in campuses all over the Philippines, and is a staunch volunteerism advocate. Ms. Badoy was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) and Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) for 2010.

Submission for entries to Everyone's Vision Petron, a national student art competition, is set for Monday, 25 July 2011.

Themed Lakbay Pinoy —Journeys to Remember, Pathways to Rediscover, this year’s competition focuses on life journeys expressed symbolically by roads, highways and byways. It can be a mountain path representing a journey to success, or a zigzag lane symbolizing seasons of change. It can be a forest trail sparking childhood memories, or a nostalgic route conjuring reminiscences of student life.

Everyone’s Vision Petron is open to all talented students enrolled in a regular university or college course, or in tutorial and photography classes. Student artists may compete in three categories: Painting (oil and water-based media), photography, and t-shirt design.

In the painting category, six Grand Prize winners will each receive P50,000; for the colored photography category, six Grand Prize winners will each receive P30,000; and in the t-shirt design category, three Grand Prize winners will each receive P30,000. The Coca-Cola Export Company has signed on to support Pinoy_Blogfest 2.0, Gadgets Magazine’s annual social media event. Now on its second year, Pinoy_Blogfest 2.0 is scheduled to happen on 5 August 2011 at the Trinoma Activity Center in Quezon City.

In its first run in 2010, Pinoy_Blogfest 1.0 attempted to start the dialogue on ethical issues confronting social media, with the theme Opportunity & Responsibility. Petron initiates Tulong Kapwa for Davao flash flood victims

In response to the recent flash floods that hit Davao City and neighboring areas, Petron initiated the Tulong Kapwa campaign to provide assistance to the victims and their families. Petron and its dealers turned over last July 6, relief goods consisting of several sacks of rice and boxes of food items, as well as school supplies such as Petron notebooks and pens to address the immediate needs of the affected families.

Heavy rains last June 28 caused the Pangi River to overflow, resulting in a 10-ft. flood in five barangays in Davao City. Over 12,000 families were affected by the floods, destroying 50 homes and resulting in about 30 fatalities. Several areas were again submerged in knee-deep waters on July 3, prompting affected families to evacuate their homes.

To help victims recover from this calamity, Petron dealers and service stations in Davao have mobilized as official Tulong Kapwa centers to accept donations in cash and in kind. Those who wish to provide assistance may go to any participating Petron station displaying the Tulong Kapwa signage.

The post-luncheon panel discussion hosted by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship brings together a powerhouse cast of SME advocates to serve as role models for Pinoy SMEs. Couples for Christ (CFC), a faith-based organization for married couples, celebrated its 30th Anniversary last 26 June 2011 with a grand celebration at the Rizal Park in Manila. An estimated crowd of 80,000 to 100,000 participants joined the whole-day program, marking the culmination of CFC’s week-long celebration.

A CFC golf tournament at the Villamor Airbase Greens kicked off the activities last 21 June 2011. This was followed by a CFC International Mission core gathering at the Christ the King Parish Church in GreenMeadows, Quezon City, in the evening of the same day.

On Wednesday, 22 June, the group held the CFC Global Leaders Summit, the CFC ANCOP Congress, and the ANCOP Song Writing Festival at the AFP Theater. Thurday, 23 June marked the elections of the CFC international council and board of elders.

The program on Friday, 24 June, consisted of the CFC Church Integration Contest and the CFC Cultural Night at the PICC Forum Tent, while the whole day of Saturday, 25 June, was devoted to the Freedom to Love Conference at the ULTRA.

Free entrepreneurship training programs offered

As part of the celebrations of SME Development Week, DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo recently announced that budding entrepreneurs can avail of free entrepreneurship training programs to be offered on 8-9 July 2011, at the Philippine Trade Training Center. This is in keeping with the drive to encourage more Filipinos to participate in the SME sector, with the call to action “Pinoy SME: Business Tayo!”

The free entrepreneurship programs will consist of Business Development Briefing Sessions offered by DTI-Bureau of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development (BMSMED) as part of its mandate to provide start-up enterprises with a knowledge base on a wide range of topics relevant to SME development.

Scheduled in the morning of Friday, 8 July 2011 are the following briefings: How to be an Entrepreneur; Barangay Micro Business Enterprise (BMBE) Law; Awareness on Product Standards Law; Consumer Rights and Protection; How to Acquire a BFAD Certificate.

The afternoon session for Friday, 8 July 2011 will offer: Integrated Business Licensing; Orientation on HALAL Certification; Orientation on the Cleaner Production for Small Business; Packaging Design and Labeling; Product Design Awareness; Orientation on Registering for Patents, Trademarks and Trade Names.

Provincial MSMED Councils honor SME Rising Stars

In the run-up to SME Week, which will be celebrated on the second week of July this year, the provincial MSMED Councils have started announcing the winners of the SME Rising Star Award in their respective provinces.

With government statistics indicating that 99.6% of registered businesses belong to the micro, small and medium enterprise segments, the government’s SME Star Program was formulated as an important framework for SME development and promotion.

According to DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo, “The SME Star Program is a competency program that supports the growth and sustainability of SMEs through the business development stages. In cooperation with other SME stakeholders, we offer a package of services and interventions in such key areas as marketing, production, financial management, and management and technical skills development, in order to nurture the enterprise’s growth to the next stage.”

The SME Star Program identifies three stages of business development, with a corresponding recognition or award for each level. Stage 1 is the start-up or capability-building phase, and is recognized through the SME Rising Star Award given at the provincial level. Each province awards three SME Rising Stars — one winner each for the micro, small, and medium enterprise categories. A total of 249 start-up businesses are recognized as SME Rising Stars annually. Stage 2, identified as the market penetration or export awareness stage, is the next step in successful enterprise development. At this stage, outstanding businesses are recognized at the regional level with the SME Star Elite Award. Per region, one micro, one small and one medium enterprise is conferred the SME Star Elite Award; a total of 48 deserving SMEs will receive the recognition annually.

Nueva Ecija recently announced the province’s first-ever nominees to the SME Star Elite Awards, as follows: Kababaihang Masigla ng Nueva Ecija, Nueva Cabanatuan Meat Products, and Philnor Aqua, Inc. for the micro, small and medium enterprise categories, respectively. At the awarding ceremonies, Dr. Reynato C. Arimbuyutan, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Nueva Ecija chapter noted that, “The awards might be the key needed to open the interest of businessmen to improve the competitiveness of the province.”

The SME Star Program is seen as an important component in MSME development and promotion, as it recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs that have shown remarkable achievements in growing their businesses to become globally competitive enterprises.

As part of the SME Week celebration in July, President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino is expected to launch the search for the national SME Star Presidential Awardees from among the top SMEs in the country, particularly those that have successfully expanded operations in the domestic market or become globally competitive. One SME Star Presidential Award winner will be announced in 2012.

Heat, humidity can reduce efficacy of medicines

Studies show that exposure to heat and humidity can affect the potency and stability of many prescription and over-the-counter medicines. In fact, although most drugs are recommended to be stored at “room temperature”, the ideal temperature range for safe drug storage is actually from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The Philippines’ tropical weather is less than ideal for proper medicine storage. Especially during the hot summer months, daytime weather often reaches over 30 C. This can result in a degradation of our medications, making them less efficacious with the possibility of producing some adverse effects, without our knowing it.

• Never leave your medicines inside the car for long periods; do not store medicines in the trunk of your car.

• When traveling, keep your medicines in your hand-carried bag instead of checking them in with your luggage. Be sure, though, to use their original containers with pharmacy labels to avoid problems with international checkpoints.

• Do not leave the cotton plug inside the medicine bottle. Doing so can draw moisture into the container.

• Check the expiration date each time you take a drug. Throw out and replace any medications that are out of date.

• Never use medication that has changed color, consistency or odor, regardless of expiration date. Throw away capsules or tablets that stick together, are harder or softer than normal, or are cracked or chipped.

• Do not store your medicines inside the bathroom. Bathroom cabinets tend to be warm and humid, an environment that speeds up the drug breakdown process. Bathrooms are among the worst places to store medicines.

DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo has announced that preparations for the SME Development Week celebrations this year are well underway, with commitments of support from key stakeholders.

In particular, the SME Summit, scheduled for 07 July 2011 at the Philippine Trade Training Center, is expected to serve as a springboard for the SME Development Agenda of the Aquino administration.

The morning plenary session, which will showcase SME Success Stories, will focus on how private and public sector partnership can nurture award-winning, world-class businesses from ordinary citizens.

The first plenary session will highlight an Enabling Business Environment as one of the key components for SME success. Lined up as resource persons are Jose Sales de Villa, proprietor of Giga Enterprises, an award-winning producer of organic wellness products; Emilio Tingson, a licensing officer from Ormoc City; and Sergio Ortiz Luis, Jr., chairman of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The next sharing session on Access to Finance will start off with a presentation by Rommel T. Juan, president and chief executive officer of Binalot Fiesta Foods, Inc., a local fastfood chain serving favorite Pinoy dishes wrapped in banana leaves. After him will follow Dr. Ramon Quesada, chairman of the Small Business Corporation, a government agency that provides liquidity support and financing facilities for SMEs. Petron Lakbay Alalay supports global initiative for road safety

Themed Lakbay Pinoy —Journeys to Remember, Pathways to Rediscover, this year’s competition focuses on life journeys expressed symbolically by roads, highways and byways. It can be a forest trail sparking childhood memories, or a nostalgic route conjuring reminiscences of student life.

With its emphasis on safety and proper adherence to public riding safety rules and regulations, the 2nd Petron Sprint 4T Endurance an Economy Run, held last 05 February 2011, attracted a field of 306 entries in eight classes.

The most fuel-efficient run was registered by Mark Paul San Pascual, who was able to achieve 67.14-km/li in a Honda Dash 110cc, topping a field of 67 riders in Class 1 (100-115cc).

Topping the other classes were: Class 2 (116-125cc) – Jesusa Ramos in a Honda XRM 125cc, with 57.09-km/li; Class 3 (126-150cc) – Glenn Mora in a Yamaha Sniper 135cc, with 61.57-km/li; Class 4 (151-250cc) – Orland Lim in a Bajaj Rouser 200cc, with 51.76-km/li; Class 5 (251-500cc) – Emmanuel Balmes in a Sym Citycom 300cc, with 32.62-km/li; Class 6 (501-750cc) – Jun Santiago in a BMW 650GS 650cc, with 29.16-km/li; Class 7 (751-999cc) – Baltazar Usis in a BMW F800GS 800cc, with 28.64-km/li; and Class 8 (0ver 1000cc) – Joseph Ching in a BMW R1200RT 1200cc, with 25.83-km/li.

The 2nd Petron Sprint 4T Endurance and Economy Run required competitors to travel a distance of 750-kilometers with the most economical fuel consumption at the most reasonable time. Taking off from Petron-Diego Silang, the riders proceeded to Valenzuela, Bulacan and took McArthur Highway through the provinces of Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Benguet and Mountain Province. Nineteen Petron service stations along the route were designated as official filling stations and checkpoints to verify that the participants followed the correct route and prescribed speed. The final checkpoint was at the Petron service station in Kisad, Baguio City.

Awarding ceremonies were held on 06 February 2011, at the Prince Hotel in Baguio City. The top 3 finishers for each class received trophies, cash prizes, Certificates of Accomplishment and t-shirt. The top 10 finishers in each class received a Petron Sprint 4T vest.

DTI search for outstanding entrepreneurs now open for nominations

DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo has announced that the 2011 SME STAR Program is now officially starting its search for the country’s outstanding entrepreneurs as part of the administration’s development agenda to strengthen and support micro, small and medium enterprises. The latest statistics show that MSMEs represent 99.6% of all registered businesses in the country, and can thus be considered as the backbone of the Philippine economy.

The SME STAR Program is seen as an important component in MSME development and promotion, as it recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs that have shown remarkable achievements in growing their businesses to become globally competitive enterprises. Three award levels are included in the SME STAR Program, corresponding to stages in enterprise growth.

For enterprises in the start-up and capability-building stage, the SME Rising Star Award will be conferred to outstanding MSMEs at the provincial level, with one winner each for the micro, small and medium enterprise categories. Local MSMEs are encouraged to vie for this award, by submitting the required nomination forms and other documents to the Provincial MSMED Council c/o the DTI Provincial Offices. The Provincial MSMED Council determines the winners based on judging criteria. For 2011, there will be 264 SME Rising Star Award winners who will receive a DTI Citation.

Enterprises at the domestic market penetration and export awareness stage are eligible for nomination to SME Star Elite Award, which is conferred at the regional level. Provincial MSMED Councils may endorse one nominee for each of the micro, small and medium enterprise categories. The Regional MSMED Council or an equivalent body screens and determines the winners of the SME Star Elite Award. A total of 51 outstanding enterprises from 17 regions are expected to earn the 2011 SME Star Elite Award, consisting of a DTI Citation.

For highly successful enterprises that have reached the export and expansion stage, the highest recognition is given through the SME Star Presidential Award. Chosen from the pool of current SME Star Elite Awardees, the National MSMED Council executive committee determines the qualifying finalists who are then submitted to a distinguished board of judges. There will be 1 winner for the 2011 SME Star Presidential Award. The winner will receive a Presidential Trophy during the awarding ceremonies to be held as part of the SME Week celebrations in July 2011.

These fuel conservation tips have become more relevant in the light of high oil prices.

Petron EnerTripid educates motorists on how to optimize their resources and get the most value from their fuel expenses. Some Petron EnerTripid tips that can help us save on fuel consumption are:

1. Beating the red light consumes more gas. We tend to accelerate as we approach an intersection, particularly when trying to avoid getting caught at a stop light. More often than not, this effort is futile and just wastes gas.

2. Don’t go heavy on the pedal. To save gas, step lightly on the pedal. A heavy foot on the accelerator is not only a gas-guzzler, it can also produce an uncomfortable, jerky ride with short bursts of speed and constant braking. Save yourself and your passengers from a high-stress ride, keep your foot light on the pedal.

Motorcycle enthusiasts who want to test their mettle are invited to compete in the 2nd Petron Sprint 4T Endurance & Economy Run, scheduled for 05 February 2011. Open to all types of four-stroke motorcycles, the event requires competitors to travel a distance of 750-kilometers with the most economical fuel consumption at the most reasonable time, while adhering to public riding safety rules and regulations.

The 2nd Petron Sprint 4T Endurance & Economy Run will group participants into eight categories based on engine displacement. These are Class 1: 100 -115cc; Class 2: 116-125cc; Class 3: 126-150cc; Class 4: 151- 250cc; Class 5: 251-599cc; Class 6: 600-750cc; Class 7: 751-1000cc; and Class 8: over 1001cc.

The Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI) recently launched the Car of the Year 2010 signaling the start of this year’s search to find the best car in the Philippines. The kick-off event for the 8th Car of the year was held at Congo Grille El Pueblo, Ortigas Center Pasig City and was attended by journalists from various TV, broadcast, print and online publications as well as the entire local motoring industry.

CAGI annually conducts consumer-oriented testing of locally available motor vehicles which helps the motoring public choose the vehicle best suited to their needs. COTY-P aims to further expand consumer awareness by making the awards relevant and meaningful to the motoring public. Quisumbing Torres Lawyers Speak at Mining Philippines 2010 Conference & Exhibition

With mining identified as one of the essential industries expected to fuel economic growth, key players converged at the Mining Philippines 2010 Conference and Exhibition organized by the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines at the Manila Hotel last 14 – 16 September 2010.

Quisumbing Torres (QT) partners Emmanuel S. Buenaventura and Dennis A. Quintero discussed critical legal concerns confronting Philippine mining industry players at the panel session themed “Addressing Current Issues” held on the last day of the conference. Former Chief Justice Reynato Puno gave a presentation entitled “Clarifying Rules of Procedure for Environmental Cases” and Patricia Bunye of the Chamber of Mines’ Legal Committee moderated the panel discussion.

Emmanuel Buenaventura, partner of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group of QT, and lead litigation lawyer handling mining arbitration and dispute resolution work, discussed the new Rules of Procedure on Environmental Cases (“RPEC”) issued by the Philippine Supreme Court on 29 April 2010. He provided the conference with an overview of the civil, criminal and special civil actions on the enforcement or violations of environmental laws. He also discussed the implications of the liberalized rules on standing and citizen’s suits, deferment of payment of filing fees, various innovations for the speedy disposition of cases, environmental protection orders (EPO and TEPO), prohibition on injunction, the writ of kalikasan (environment), the writ of continuing mandamus, the precautionary principle of evidence, and the treatment of cases that are deemed to be a “strategic lawsuit against public participation” (SLAPP) under the RPEC. Noting that shortly after the issuance of the RPEC, a class action was already filed by hundreds of residents in Surigao against three mining companies and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (“DENR”), and that jurisprudence on the RPEC will continue to evolve with other test cases that may be filed in the future, he said that the mining industry could face the challenge by pursuing current initiatives to revisit and review the RPEC, making internal preparations against similar actions, complying with environmental standards, or initiating relevant legislation.

Dennis Quintero gave a comprehensive run-down of the Alternative Mining Bill in his presentation entitled “Proposed Alternative Mining Act: Threat or Phantom”, arguing that any constructive provisions of this proposed legislation are already addressed in current Philippine mining law and regulations. He noted that the current Philippine Mining Act of 1995 is a world-class mining law, comparable to other mineral-rich and high-income nations, and that it addresses international best practices requirements. Further, he proposed that improvements in the current mining regime may be achieved through passage of regulations under the 1995 Mining Law or contractual stipulation in mineral agreements or Financial or Technical Assistance Agreements.

Bolstering his argument against the passage of new legislation in the form of the Alternative Mining Bill, Dennis Quintero gave a comparative summary of international best practices/guidelines vis-à-vis existing Philippine laws/regulations, showing that the latter address international best practices, particularly in the area of environment protection.

Suzuki Philippines, one of the leading motorcycle brands in the country, is bringing drag racing to a legal venue by staging the Suzuki Raider Breed Wars: The Quarter Mile Battle.

Aware of the dangers posed by illegal drag racing which is usually held in open roads at night, Suzuki organized the Raider Breed Wars to give drag race enthusiasts a legal and proper venue to showcase their skills.

The first leg kicked off last May 30, on the Old Airport Road Km 10, Sasa, Davao City, and attracted a crowd of more than 5,000 riders, racers and motorcycle enthusiasts from all over Mindanao. Suzuki Philippines president Satoshi Uchida led the unveiling of the Kizashi Sports concept car at the recently-concluded 3rd Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City last August 19 to 22, 2010.

Unveiled at the New York Auto Show 2008, the Kizashi Sports concept car is the final version of the Kizashi concept car series, with the production model due for release this 2010 in other countries.

In Japanese, kizashi means “a sign of great things to come” — signifying the unparalleled combination of driver satisfaction, looks and quality of Suzuki’s new flagship model as it breaks into the executive car segment with a completely new type of sedan.

Set up as a lounge with a relaxed atmosphere, the Suzuki display was manned by friendly sales executives from the different Suzuki dealerships. Featured were the bestselling Suzuki Celerio, Swift and APV Type II, as well as the Grand Vitara 4 x 2, and the newly-launched SX4 Aero and SX4 Crossover. Motor show guests were also given the opportunity to test drive the SX4 Crossover, APV Type II, Celerio and Swift at the outdoor test drive area.

During the opening day, guests were welcomed to the exhibit with a teaser video about the Kizashi concept car. This was formally unveiled during the second day in ceremonies witnessed by motoring media, dealer principals, and true-blue Suzuki fans. Cocktail food and sparkling wine were served.

New AVT Navigator GPS devices launched

As part of its participation in the upcoming CAMPI motorshow, Suzuki Philippines will be showcasing the Kizashi Sports concept car. Themed “Drive the Green Road,” CAMPI’s 3rd Philippine International Motorshow is scheduled at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. from August 19 to 22, 2010,

Unveiled at the New York Auto Show 2008, the Kizashi Sports concept car is the final version of the Kizashi concept car series, with the production model due for release this 2010 in other countries.

The development concept behind the Suzuki Kizashi was to create an emotionally appealing sedan for active people, emphasizing five key points: (1) exterior sportiness combined with interior elegance; (2) European-tuned handling; (3) smoothness and quietness; (4) superior engine performance and fuel efficiency; and (5) stability through Suzuki’s i-AWD system for 4WD model.

Developed for the global market, Suzuki engineers tested and tuned the Kizashi to handle diverse driving conditions such as the cold weather trials in Minnesota, hot weather trials in Death Valley. The brakes were tuned in the Swiss Alps; handling was perfected on challenging country roads in the United Kingdom, and on the autobahns and the Nurburgring in Germany. The i-AWD system was tested in New Zealand.

Book on Philippine Institutions Examines Key Reforms

The commitment of President Benigno S. Aquino III to fight corruption and promote good governance is essentially a question of rebuilding institutions. Tackling the definition of institutions as well as the state of the Philippine economy and politics, the book Philippine Institutions: Growth and Prosperity for All, was launched last August 4, 2010, at the Sining Kamalig Art Gallery, Gateway Mall, Quezon City.

This volume underscores the decisive role of institutions at this moment and for the long run to achieve prosperity for all. It wants to create a sense of urgency to tackle the reforms of political and economic institutions, considering the cooptation or subversion of institutional forms and arrangements during the past administration. The book also recognizes the interaction of institutions and policies, and attempts to propose policies that not only address the current development obstacles but also have a long-lasting impact on institutions.

There is a diverse gathering of contributors for this volume, well-known in their respective fields which range from economics to law and governance, among others. The contributors are Michael M. Alba on institutional change, Joseph Anthony Y. Lim on the macro-economy, Raul Pangalangan on judicial reforms, Gilberto Llanto and Eduardo Gonzalez on policy reforms, Nepomuceno A.
