Motolite volunteers undertake Brigada Eskwela Plus Caravan

Motolite, the country’s leading automotive battery brand, once again demonstrated their strong education advocacy by fielding employee-volunteers for the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela program from May 24-29, 2010.

Motolite’s Brigada Eskwela efforts were focused on a Balik-Baterya adopted school, Payatas Elementary School, located in one of the most depressed urban areas in Quezon City. Contributing a total of 85 man-hours, Motolite volunteers cleaned up and refurbished two  classrooms, fixed up 103 desks and armchairs, and covered 115 Balik-Baterya donated books.

Near its manufacturing facilities in Sta. Maria, Bulacan, Motolite also adopted three schools — Miguel Cruz Elementary School, Jose Juan Serapio Elementary School, and Balasing Elementary School.  A total of 174 employee man-hours contributed to repainting 62 classrooms and cleaning up 6 garden lots and school grounds.

Since 2007, Motolite and its mother company, the Ramcar Group, have supported the Brigada Eskwela Plus, which encourages national community involvement in education initiatives that focus on: (1) year-round school maintenance activities; (2) improvement of student participation and reduction of drop-outs; and (3) improvement of student performance.

Through its Balik Baterya-LEAP program, Motolite has spearheaded the donation of workbooks, reference and instructional materials to Payatas Elementary School, benefiting more than 3,000 students.

According to corporate social responsibility manager Eman Ragaza, “Motolite believes that we have a corporate social responsibility to contribute to the betterment of society.  We are passionate in finding new ways of enhancing our business and building our nation for a better life, and we would like to give back to our communities by helping improve the quality of education of the Filipino youth.”

Motolite batteries are manufactured by Philippine Batteries, Inc. (PBI), the largest manufacturer, exporter and distributor of automotive, motorcycle and industrial battery products and solutions in the Philippines.  Its fully integrated facility in Sta. Maria, Bulacan, is one of the largest and most modern battery manufacturing facilities in Southeast Asia. It also has the country’s only ISO 14001-certified, environmentally-compliant recycling facility, the second biggest in Asia.  The company exports Motolite batteries to the United States, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the rest of Asia.

Motolite-powered electric vehicles join Earth Day motorcade

Motolite, the country’s leading automotive battery brand, supported the Earth Day pollution-free motorcade held last 22 April 2010, by powering electric vehicles like the REVA, the e-Jeepney, and the e-Trike.  The motorcade, which was themed  “Electric Vehicles, Bicycles, and Miss Earth: Making Waves in the Metro” started off from the Department of Natural Resources (DENR) compound at Visayas Avenue in Quezon City at 7:00 am, traversing EDSA with the early morning traffic to end at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Motivated to discover cleaner and cheaper alternative sources of energy as part of its corporate social responsibility, Motolite is a recognized prime mover behind pollution-free electric vehicles in the country.  By improving on its patented golf cart battery technology, Motolite has been able to produce a stronger, more reliable battery which can endure the extreme demands of public transportation, such as the e-Jeepney. Several local governments have adopted the e-Jeepneys, notably Makati City, Bacolod City, and Puerto Princesa City.

According to Motolite marketing manager Melissa Valdez, “As a Filipino company, Motolite is always happy to support initiatives that will help ensure a cleaner environment for future generations.”  Aside from its support for electric vehicles, Motolite has also been at the forefront of an environmental protection program that encourages proper recycling of used lead acid batteries through its Balik-Baterya advocacy.

Motolite showcases Filipino ingenuity in Moto-Art custom bike

Motolite, the country’s leading automotive battery brand, recently unveiled its Moto-Art custom bike, an old Honda XRM motorcycle refurbished by Hardcore Brothers into a fully functional show and performance bike. First displayed at the Cebu motorcycle convention last March, the Motolite Moto-Art bike will be showcased in upcoming motorcycle events.

Starting out with a vintage Honda XRM 110cc, the Motolite Moto-Art bike was transformed into a shiny chrome beauty in a tribute to the great Japanese motorcycle builder/designer Chicara. To preserve the integrity of Honda motorcycle technology, the original 110cc engine was retained with stock Honda XRM parts used for the cases, heads, cylinders, carburetors and transmission. Stock Honda XRM parts were also used for the forks and foot controls, as well as the front and rear brakes.

To implement the creative vision, Hardcore Brothers took apart the rest of the bike and introduced a lot of modifications. The chassis was altered into a more rigid form, with wider 110/70/17 front and 120/80/17 rear tires. All electrical components were hidden and embedded into the frame for a clean, fluid look. The swing arm was extended four inches out. Buell triple trees were installed with an additional 5-degrees out to produce a longer rake on which a reversed handle bar was set up to create a look reminiscent of the café racer era. The solo saddle with bicycle springs as well as the kick starter were fabricated for an old-school look, while all-over chrome finishing gave the Motolite Moto-Art its distinctive flashy finish.

Taking almost two months to complete, the final specifications of the Motolite Moto-Art bike include the following Hardcore Brothers custom parts: air cleaner, gas tank, frame, seat and handle bars. It also features a Mity Mike exhaust, Drag Specialties “ET Dual” headlights, Japan LED taillight, and Buell trees.

According to Motolite product manager Melissa Valdez, “Our objective in this customization was to showcase ingenuity and innovation in transforming something ordinary into a work of art, while at the same time showing how our Motolite motorcycle battery is at the heart of the motorcycle’s engine and accessories. We are very proud of out Motolite Moto-Art custom bike because it is not only a thing of beauty, it is also a roadworthy performance bike which you can ride all over the Philippines.”

Boasting of the latest advances in motorcycle battery technology, Motolite provides the growing number of motorcyclists in the country with safe, reliable and long-lasting batteries. Motolite’s 12-volt motorcycle batteries have been infused with Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Technology for greater fluid retention and longer life. AGM technology also makes the batteries more versatile, as they can now be installed at any angle required by the make and model of the motorcycle – even upside down if needed.

Motolite at forefront of Philippine solar car project; supports SIKAT development for 2011 world challenge

Motolite, the country’s leading automotive battery brand and a strong supporter of alternative energies, has strengthened its commitment to the Philippine solar car project with its continued support for SIKAT, the country’s second foray in the World Solar Challenge. SIKAT is currently being developed by a student team from the De La Salle University (DLSU), to compete in the 11th World Solar Challenge set for 2011 in Australia.
The World Solar Challenge is an extreme endurance race, requiring solar-powered cars to travel 3,010-kilometers across the Australian Outback from Darwin to Adelaide. First run in 1987, the race attracts teams from across the globe.
SIKAT is the successor to SINAG, the country’s first solar car, which was conceptualized and developed by DLSU engineering students, and entered as the Philippine entry in the 9th World Solar Car Competition in 2007. SINAG successfully completed the grueling cross-country route and finished 12th in a field of 41 solar cars from different countries worldwide.
According to Ramon Agustines, chairman of the Philippine Solar Car Society (PSCS) and president of Motolite, “We believe solar energy can be the fuel of choice for transportation in the future, especially in the Philippines where solar energy is so abundant. This year, we hope to build awareness of the benefits of solar technology and our country’s potential to play a leading role in this field.”
To promote increased awareness of the benefits of solar energy among Filipinos, SIKAT was publicly launched last December 16, 2009, at the SM Mall of Asia in Manila. This is the first of a series of provincial road shows that will bring SIKAT and solar energy closer to the general public.
“SIKAT will be a great source of pride for the Philippines, as it highlights our ingenuity, our will to lead, our capability for technology, and our commitment to the use of clean, renewable energy,” Agustines remarks.
The Philippine Solar Car Society is a non-stock, non-profit organization designed to promote sustainable utilization of renewable energy sources. Its board of trustees is composed of top executives from some of the country’s leading companies — Ramon Agustines, president of Oriental Motolite Marketing Corporation; Edgar Chua, chief executive officer of Pilipinas Shell; Henry Co, chairman of Ford Motor Co.; Roberto Kanapi, vice-president for communications of Pilipinas Shell; Tammy Lipana, chairman and senior partner of Price Water House Cooper; Vince Perez, former secretary of the Department of Energy; and Greg Reichow, president of Sunpower.
