SMEs invited to showcase products in food trade fair

Republic Act 9501 or the Magna Carta for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has set every second  week of July as Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development (MSMED) Week.

One of the highlights of this year’s MSME Development celebrations is the mounting of a Food Trade Fair, which will showcase food products sourced from Filipino MSMEs from all over the country. Billed as "EATS more fun in the Philippines", the trade fair will be held from July 12 to 15, 2012, at the Megatrade Halls 2 & 3 in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

At least 190 producers and manufacturers from all over the Philippines will be offering a variety of the finest fresh and processed food products. From northern Luzon, there will be vegetables and coffee from the province of Kalinga, honey and vinegar from Benguet, and bagnet and longanisa from the Ilocos provinces. MSMEs will bring organic and unpolished rice from Nueva Ecija, dessert food and other delicacies from Pampanga and Laguna, and malunggay food products from Batangas. Pinangat and pili products from Bicol, and fruit-flavored wines from Agusan del Sur will also be among the gastronomic delights on sale.

With the growing popularity of weekend markets in Metro Manila, the food business offers many opportunities for business-minded individuals to start up their own enterprise. At the same time, enterprising individuals from the regions can take advantage of the agricultural produce such as fruits and vegetables within their geographical areas to produce delicacies and other specialty foods that are much sought after by food loving Filipinos here and abroad.

Filipino MSMEs who are interested in participating in this food trade fair may get in touch with the Bureau of MSME Development (BMSMED) at telephone numbers: 7515059, 7515036 or the Bureau of Domestic Trade at telephone numbers: 7513227, 7513229.

Generika Drugstore offers safe weight-loss supplement, Lobese

With the number of weight loss drugs and dietary supplements available on the market, consumers are often trying to find the right one to fit their bodies and lifestyles. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seal of approval is present on many of these drugs and supplements, that does not necessarily mean that they are safe. Many of these weight loss drugs and supplements, or “pampa” drugs—pampapayat (slimming), pampaputi (whitening), etc.—come from other countries in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand and China, and are sold online without FDA approval. The safety of some of these “pampa” drugs have been found by the FDA to cause adverse health effects ranging from skin damage to even death due to some drugs' high mercury content. However, Generika Drugstore now offers Lobese, a safe and natural alternative to "pampapayat" drugs.

Studies show that 75% of overweight individuals are addicted to carbohydrates. Carbohydrate addiction is caused by an imbalance—an over release of the hormone, insulin. Too much insulin results in a strong impulse to eat. During the digestive process, carbohydrates from starchy foods like bread and potatoes are converted by the body into sugars.

Lobese contains the phaesolus vulgaris seed, or the common bean seed, in 500mg capsules. This means it contains high amounts of starch, protein, dietary fiber, iron, potassium, selenium, molybdenum, thiamine, vitamin B6, and folic acid. Lobese is a starch blocker and works by blocking the alpha-amylase enzyme, which contributes to weight gain by breaking down complex carbohydrates into glucose, which in turn is converted into lipids which are stored as body fat, required for the metabolism of starchy carbohydrates. The phaesolus vulgaris in Lobese will result in some ingested starches passing through the body undigested. This results in lower blood glucose levels, lower insulin levels, and ultimately lower rates of body fat storage.

The recommended dosage according to the Monthly Index of Medical Specialties, a guide to pharmaceuticals for medical practitioners, is 1-2 tablets twice daily, around 15-20 minutes before meals, and should be taken on an empty stomach. One does not need a prescription for Lobese, and it is approved by the FDA as a dietary supplement.

In addition to helping people lose weight, Lobese can also slow the progression of atherosclerosis, prevent heart attacks, reduce the risk of sudden death due to irregular heart rhythms at low doses, and at higher doses, also can treat hyper-triglyceridemia and reduce hypertension. At all doses, it can reduce joint pain, relieve morning stiffness, and can be useful in treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Those who took Lobese as compared to a placebo lost an average of 6.45 lb (2.93 kg) as compared to less than 1 lb (0.45 kg) on the placebo.

Lobese is manufactured by Zifam Pinnacle Pty Ltd., an Australian pharmaceutical company with a significant multinational presence in the Asia-Pacific Rim, ensuring that Lobese is a legitimate product distributed locally by an award-winning drugstore chain, Generika Drugstore.

Generika Drugstore was founded in September 2003 to educate Filipinos about generic brand drugs and to provide them with quality affordable generic medicines as an alternative to higher cost branded drugs. In 2011, Generika was named as the Most Promising Filipino Franchise by the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) and the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI). In 2009, Generika was awarded with the Quality Seal Award by the Bureau of Food & Drugs (BFAD); and in 2008, Generika Drugstore was proclaimed the national winner in the drugstore chain category by the Drugstore Association of the Philippines (DSAP). There are 300 Generika Drugstore locations nationwide.

La Salle Greenhills holds safety seminar for school bus drivers

A school bus driver trying out the Fatal Vision alcohol simulation goggles.
In preparation for school opening this June, La Salle Greenhills held a safety seminar for school bus drivers on 31 May 2012. Hosted by the PALS (Parents Association of La Salle) under the leadership of  president Cindy Banaria and Information Chair Fe Rizo, the safety seminar consisted of a specially-designed two-hour module aimed at re-orienting drivers to defensive driving and other safety considerations.  More than 80 participants listened to the resource speakers led by former LTO/LTFRB chair Alberto Suansing, who is now executive director of PGRSP (Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership).  The seminar is part of PALS' thrust to look after the safety and welfare of LSGH students.

The program--aimed at school bus drivers, family drivers and parent-drivers--was customized by Safe-T-Ryders Training Center to focus on safety awareness, particularly since they are entrusted with the care of school children.  The seminar covered the following topics:

Defensive driving as an attitude and mindset. Due to lack of proper training and prolonged interaction with unruly public utility drivers, the common Filipino driver has learned to adopt an aggressive attitude while driving. This safety seminar aimed to re-orient drivers by reminding them of the basic rules of road use and the negative consequences of not observing them.

Traffic rules, road signs and markings. Without formal driving lessons, most Filipino drivers have little knowledge about traffic rules, road signs and markings. To fill in this gap in knowledge, basic rules and common road signs/markings were discussed, and drivers were encouraged to learn the rules and signs for their safety as well as their passengers’.

Right of way rules. Most collisions occur at intersections. The seminar familiarized drivers with the guidelines to observe when crossing intersections so that they can take proper precautions, especially when these crossings are not controlled by traffic signals or enforcers.

Vehicle dynamics. Drivers were also made to understand the simple laws of physics that affect vehicle handling. For instance, a vehicle loaded with passengers (hence, heavier weight) will require a longer braking distance compared to a similar but empty vehicle.

Factors affecting driving. The instructors discussed several factors that could affect driver perception and judgment, with special emphasis on the dangerous effects of alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

Duties and responsibilities of school service operators.  A special resource person, Alberto Suansing, current executive director of the PGRSP, reviewed for the participants the various Memo Circulars of LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising & Regulatory Board) regulating school shuttle service operators.  He gamely answered numerous queries from operators and drivers about commonly misunderstood rules on school service operation.

Safe-T-Ryders founder Arnel Doria remarked: “We would like to congratulate the parents and faculty of La Salle Greenhills for taking this proactive measure to ensure the safety of their students. On a daily basis, we entrust our children to the care of drivers, whether they are taking the school bus or using the family car. Through these types of road safety seminars, we are taking that extra step to keep our children safe as they travel to and from school.”

Cindy Banaria, president of PALS La Salle Greenhills, observed that: “The driving safety seminar was appreciated by the operators and drivers themselves.   The teaching approach was very practical and close to real life.  It is indeed a change of mindset for the participants especially for the drivers.  We felt that we gave the drivers and operators a big favor and more so for the parents of the children that they drive for. Safety is very important in our daily lives. The seminar harps on the safety aspect on the road.  Thank you, Safe-T-Ryders.”

PALS education chairperson Fe Rizo added, “The seminar provided an opportunity for the school bus drivers and operators to gain a new perspective about safety driving, unlearn old notions and begin having a new mindset focused on safety. For us parents, we are more at peace with the thought that the people driving our children are now equipped with a new attitude to transport them safely to and from school. Our children will be safer than ever beginning now!”

Safe-T-Ryders Training Center was established by Arnel Doria, a respected marketing executive who played a major role in establishing Honda as a leading car brand in the Philippines. He was also instrumental in setting up the country’s first integrated vehicle training center, the Honda Safety Driving Center.

Safe-T-Ryders is manned by Julius Ballesteros, a TESDA-certified instructor who has just returned from an overseas stint as a safety driving instructor of a large Saudi Arabian company. He is assisted by Sulfikar Guiabel, an experienced LTO-accredited driving instructor.

3rd Bikers Meet-Up for Malabon riders

Safe-T-Ryders, a training center purely for motorcycle riders, reached out to Malabon riders with its 3rd Bikers Club Meet-Up last Sunday, 20 May 2012, at the Malabon Amphitheater. As part of the Araw ng Malabon celebrations, UFRC (Underbone Fury Riders Club) and City Councilor Payapa Viola Ona hosted the afternoon of fun and learning.

The number of motorcycle users is growing in double digits.   Consequently, the cases of road crashes involving motorcycles are also growing in double digits.  While we are alarmed by everyday accounts of bloody bike crashes, little is being done to mitigate them.

Here are some statistics that highlight the compelling need for a safety riding campaign:
  • 2010 LTO data show that of the 1.1-M new vehicles registered, about 80% or just over 900,000 were in the motorcycle/tricycle category. The same data set shows that registered MC/TC now total close to 3.5-million or more than 52% of the 6.6-million registered vehicle population in the country.
  • It is not surprising, therefore, that while Metro Manila accident data for the years 2005-2010 have remained steady at around 120,000 cases, those involving MC/TC have grown from just 9.4% (11,475) in 2005 to 14.6% (20,518) in 2010.

To promote greater awareness among the public in general, and motorcycle riders in particular, Safe-T-Ryders is conducting a series of Bikers Club Meet-Ups.  The goal is to engage organized bikers to take active part in the promotion of road safety and reduction of road mishaps.

Alberto H. Suansing, former LTO chief and current executive director of the Philippine Global Road Safety Program (PGRSP) and Gerry Nazzarea of MMDA Traffic Discipline Office exchanged views with representatives of the UFRC, Big Dog Riders Club, Palasan Riders, Malabon Teachers 2 Riders, Shadow Drift Riders, Agila Riders, Lagalag Riders, Archo Riders and Malabon Riders Club.  Discussions focused on issues and matters affecting the bike riders in their daily commute that touched on the use of motorcycle lane and violations of traffic enforcers.

Celebrity race rider Ms. Love-love Tioseco came for the meet-and-greet session, highlighted by endless photo-ops with all the club members.  Love-love is a familiar face to motorcycle riders through her various TV shows: Stoplight TV and UNTV-Manibela.  She is also on-board her radio show, Inside Motoring, on DZRJ 810Khz (Tue/Thu 2PM).  Love-love is now the un-official poster girl of road safety to the motorcycle clubs attending Safe T Ryders Club Meet Up.

A Safe-T-Ryders instructor conducted a demonstration using the much talked-about “Fatal Vision” goggles to emphasize the very damaging effects of riding under the influence of alcohol, and its severe consequences resulting in serious injuries and even death.  With the growing number of road crashes resulting from riding under the influence of alcohol, Safe-T-Ryders is mounting a campaign against riding motorbikes after taking alcohol.

According to founder Arnel Doria, "The Club Meet-Up program is part of our advocacy to engage bikers club members in the active campaign to multiply the number of responsible and disciplined bikers.  This will be a continuing program for Safe-T-Ryders Training Center and we invite corporate partners to join us in this road safety advocacy."

Club Meet Up is regularly supported by Gadgets Magazine, Blaze motorcycles and Independent Realty Corporation.  The Malabon leg is sponsored by Petron Sprint 4T lubes especially formulated for Philippine condition, Spyder Helmets which gave away full-face helmets to lucky winners, DOTC which provided bandanas for all participants, Barako Bull energy drink for everyone and Petron Value Card.  Touched by the enthusiasm of Malabon riders, Councilor Payapa Viola Ona gave the visitors a taste of Malabon hospitality with no less than the great-tasting pancit Malabon and refreshments for the participants.
Safe-T-Ryders Training Center believes that a sound knowledge base as well as strong riding skills result in safer road users and enhance the enjoyment of motorcycle riders. It was established by Arnel Doria, who was the head of marketing for a leading car brand and was also instrumental in setting up the country's first integrated vehicle training center. The training center is manned by Julius Ballesteros, a TESDA-certified instructor who has just completed a two-year stint as a safety driving instructor of a large Saudi Arabian company, and Sulfikar Guiabel, an experienced LTO-accredited riding/driving instructor.

The Club Meet-Up is open to bike club members as well as individual riders. Attendance is free of charge to qualified participants.   For interested parties and/or riders clubs who would like to host the meet up, please contact Safe T Ryders (Tel No. 208-8035 / Mobile: 0932-872-3389).  Check for updates on Facebook (www.facebook.com/safetryders).

Petron expands Lakbay Alalay into year-round program

In line with Petron Corporation's mission to be the leading provider of total customer solutions in the energy sector, the company is expanding its trademark Lakbay Alalay program into a full-blown, year-round campaign.

Now billed as Lakbay Alalay, Kasama Mo Sa Biyahe, the expanded program includes a slate of activities reaching far beyond the traditional motorist assistance services for Holy Week. Through this program, Petron hopes to strengthen the bond of companionship and unity with Filipinos everywhere, not just during the Holy Week but in all aspects of their daily lives.

For 2012, the following campaigns have been lined up by Petron:

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Kaligtasan. Petron volunteers will be offering emergency assistance during Holy Week (April 5-9) at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). Services will include free roadside assistance and  free towing services. Participating Petron service stations nationwide offer free vehicle safety checks year-round to help motorists ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and safe for travel. And, in the event that you encounter difficulties on the road, Petron will be there to extend a helping hand. Given that summer is now starting to be rainy, Petron Lakbay Alalay will be there to remind holiday drivers: "Rain or  Shine—Drive Safely!"

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Kalusugan. In partnership with the Red Cross, Petron will also be providing medical booths at Petron service stations located with the NLEX, SLEX and Star Tollway during the Holy Week (April 5-9).

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Turismo. Petron is fully-supporting the Department of Tourism's efforts to promote the provinces in the country as fun tourist destinations. Star Toll cards have been designed to promote key destinations in the Philippines, while welcome streamers and banners will be greeting visitors to Bulacan, Pampanga, La Union, Pangasinan, Baguio City, Laguna, Batangas, Naga City,  Palawan, Cebu and Davao.

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Masayang Pagdiriwang. Petron will also be showcasing the calendar of fiestas in the Philippines, in further support of the government's tourism promotion efforts.

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Tahanan. Petron is reaching out to local communities through outreach programs at selected barangays within Metro Manila. During the Community Awareness Symposium, Petron representatives will discuss safety measures for LPGs and lubricants. The Bureau of Fire Protection will also present useful information for avoiding household fires. After the symposium, Petron will conduct LPG leak checks and free change oil for automobiles. Petron Blaze Boosters team members will be on hand for a meet-and-greet. The schedule for the community visits are: March 30-Bgy. Hagonoy, Taguig City; March 30-Bgy. Manggahan, Pasig City; March 31-Bgy. UP Campus, Quezon City; March 31-Bgy. 598, Sta. Mesa, Manila; and April 1-Bgy. Greater Lagro, Quezon City.

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Kalikasan. This component will include barangay clean up drives in selected communities in Metro Manila. In partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), gassing up in Petron will entitle the customer to a free Lakbay Alalay sticker and a seedling to be named after him. Volunteers from Petron and other groups will join together for a tree-planting activity in Cebu (May 25), Davao (May 26) and Tanay, Rizal (May 27). A Lakbay Alalay fun run will also be held on June 17, 2012 to boost awareness of clean air.

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Kaalaman. Petron's back-to-school program will provide professional drivers an opportunity to redeem useful items for their kids. Targetted at professional drivers of commercial vehicles (jeep, van, FX, multicab, tricycle, solo rider, etc.), a P250-single receipt purchase of fuel entitles the qualified customer to a Super Tsuper Card. At subsequent visits, the customer can earn stamps which can be exchanged for rewards from April 1 to June 30, 2012.  One Super stamp may be earned via (a) a minimum single purchase of 25-liters of fuel, or (b) a single purchase of 4-liters gasoline/engine oil or 1-liter motorcycle oil. The rewards offered are: 4 stamps = Magnolia Water; 8 stamps = hand towel; 16 stamps = raincoat; and 20 stamps = notebook / pencil case / school bag. Rewards may be claimed only at the station where the Super Tsuper Card was issued.

Lakbay Alalay Biyahe Para Sa Kabuhayan. To generate the perfect bond between Petron and the youth, Petron will host a job fair for interested participants sometime in August-September 2012.

McDonald's supports riding safety advocacy

Continuing its safety awareness campaign, Safe-T-Ryders Training Center held its 2nd Club Meet-Up last Saturday, 24 March 2012, at the Quezon Memorial Circle, with McDonald's as one of the main sponsors.

"As part of the community and the everyday lives of Filipinos, McDonald's is happy to support initiatives that champion their safety and well-being,” says Margot B. Torres, VP Marketing of McDonald’s Philippines.

Former LTO chief Alberto H. Suansing exchanged views with riders belonging to the Underbone Fury Riders Club from Malabon, Bright Lights Club of Valenzuela, as well as BayTor Riders, Manressa Riders Club, RJ Riders (and Interstate Riders Club, all from Quezon City. During the discussion, Suansing stressed the potential benefits of the lane separators being installed along the Commonwealth Avenue.

According to founder Arnel Doria, "The Club Meet-Up program is part of our campaign to engage bikers club members in the active campaign to multiply the number of responsible and disciplined bikers.  This will be a continuing program for Safe-T-Ryders Training Center and we invite corporate partners to join us in this road safety advocacy."

The event was hosted by QC councilor RJ Belmonte who arranged for the spacious venue inside the sprawling Quezon Memorial Circle.  The 2nd Club Meet Up was also supported by AVT Intelligent Car Media, Blaze motorcycles and Gadgets Magazine.

Safe-T-Ryders Training Center believes that a sound knowledge base as well as strong riding skills result in safer road users and enhance the enjoyment of motorcycle riders. It was established by Arnel Doria, a former automotive marketing officer, who was instrumental in setting up the country's first integrated traffic education center. The training center is manned by Julius Ballesteros, a TESDA-certified instructor who has just completed a two-year stint as a safety driving instructor of a large Saudi Arabian company, and Sulfikar Guiabel, an experienced LTO-accredited riding/driving instructor.
